Afghanistan Stay Journal Day 1: Hotels, Food, and Safety
I am in Afghanistan.
Since it is still designated as a prohibited travel zone by the Japanese government, the hurdles are quite high, but I come here regularly for the school support project maaaru and hospital support.
Vehicles for six lanes are driving on a four-lane road, and on top of that, motorcycles are coming straight at them. Cars are coming too. It's what you call going the wrong way, but nobody is panicking. It's always the first thing that surprises me when I arrive in Kabul, but somehow I also get a sense of coming home and feel oddly reassured.
It's definitely dangerous, but it's not that there's no order; it's just that the definition and appearance of order are different. I always recalculate that within myself, and I am grateful for being able to discard the small yardstick known as common sense.
The hotel I am currently staying at is considered the safest and most expensive in Kabul. To enter, you have to get past a barricade guarded by armed security personnel, and then, after clearing a strict baggage inspection, you are finally allowed inside.
I was told in advance that it was a five-star hotel, but by international standards, I honestly don't think it has any stars at all. I wonder if the review criteria differ by country...
Of course there's no hot water, it's a room with just a single old, thin steel hanger, and the Wi-Fi no longer works either, but it's reasonably clean, I fortunately didn't encounter any bugs in the room, and I suppose I can't complain.
Maybe it was promoted to five stars because some kind of relative safety point was added as a special Afghan index.
One of my top three favorite cuisines in the world is Afghan food, so being able to eagerly look forward to that one precious meal of the day is one of the charms of Afghanistan. Anyway, the good fatty lamb meat is simply the best, so everyone please be sure to try it if you ever stop by Afghanistan!
