"I want to change but I can't" – How far can psychology explain this? The question beyond the comfort zone.

"I want to change but I can't" – How far can psychology explain this? The question beyond the comfort zone.

I want to change but I can't.」。

Almost everyone has experienced this feeling.

And there are tons of articles out there that explain this phenomenon.

Psychology has several excellent explanatory models.

However, those models, in one respect Stop explaining

The real problem lies beyond that point.

Limitations of Comfort Zone Theory

is most often cited.Comfort zone theoryThat's right.

Humans have three layers: a comfortable range, a range of just the right amount of burden, and a range where they break down from excessive burden. This is a model where stepping into the range of the right amount of burden is necessary for growth.

This is a useful metaphor. But this explanation "Why you can't take the step" reduced to not being able to take the step itself. It makes them do it. "I can't leave my comfort zone because I'm afraid to leave it" - this isn't an explanation, it's a restatement of the phenomenon.

Limitations of the Self-Efficacy Model

Another thing often talked about is Self-efficacySelf-efficacy.

A concept proposed by Stanford University psychologist Albert Bandura in 1977, referring to the belief in one's own ability to succeed. High self-efficacy leads to action, while low self-efficacy inhibits it.

This is also a useful model. However, the phenomena observed in the field cannot be fully explained by this alone.

Even people with high self-efficacy have areas they cannot change.

People who succeed in business often repeat the same patterns in their relationships. Those who reach the top in sports may struggle with the same family issues for decades.

Even with high self-efficacy, I remain unable to act in certain areas. Even though I know I can do it if I try, I can't. This is a phenomenon outside the scope of the self-efficacy model.

Limitations of Behavioral Economics

Furthermore,Status quo bias や Loss aversion There are also models from behavioral economics, such as these.

These beautifully explain "why people avoid change" using mathematical models. These are powerful model groups, including Nobel Prize-winning research in economics.

However, even these have their limits.

Just knowing about bias doesn't mean you can eliminate it.

Even those who have studied behavioral economics cannot overcome their own biases.

This is because bias is not operating at the level of consciousness. It is fundamentally difficult to control something operating unconsciously with conscious knowledge.

The point where all models stop

There is a common point where psychological models stop explaining.

That is,Depths that cannot be handled on the level of consciousness is the point where there is.

The comfort zone theory states that there is "fear," but it doesn't explain the true nature of that fear.

The self-efficacy model says "I don't believe it" and doesn't explain why it doesn't believe it.

Behavioral economics says "there are biases" and doesn't offer ways to remove them.

All models areBefore the phenomenon It stopped.

It's not that psychology is bad. Psychology is simply dealing honestly with what can be handled through observation and statistics. However, what people who truly want to change need goes beyond that range.  That's right.

Beyond the Scope of Psychology

When we try to look more deeply at "I want to change but I can't," psychological vocabulary alone is insufficient. Beyond that point, it becomes a matter of survival strategy, a matter of species-level reaction, and also a matter of the structure of society as a whole.

To grasp these within the same framework, a vocabulary different from psychology is needed.

It's not your fault that you can't change.

And it's not a problem that psychology can explain.

That is,Deeper, invisible structural issues at play. That's right.
