The decisive difference between “smart people” and "those who just look smart" is "structural resolution" -- the true nature of thinking that penetrates to the essence.

The decisive difference between “smart people” and "those who just look smart" is "structural resolution" -- the true nature of thinking that penetrates to the essence.

Even when reading the same book, attending the same meeting, or gazing at the same scenery, “special people” see something entirely different. The truth behind this is not intelligence quotient or the amount of information. It is the difference in the resolution of "structure" - this is what I call structural vision.

Structural vision is the ability to discern the “structure” behind a phenomenon.

Thinking of it as peeling back layers, rather than surface-level information processing

Structural vision is the ability to see the structure that gives rise to a phenomenon, rather than the phenomenon itself. It's not about who said what in a meeting, but why that speech structure emerged. It's not about what's trending on social media, but what underlying factors created the conditions for it to ignite. The things we are looking at are fundamentally different.

People with strong structural vision are not swayed by superficial information. Even when presented with the same information, their ability to extract "meaning" from it has an order of magnitude higher resolution. It's not about the speed of information processing, but about which layer they are observing.

A low structural resolution can be overwhelmed by surface noise.

“The trap where the more informed you are, the further you get from the essence.

Ironically, the more informed people are, the more likely they are to lose their grasp of the underlying structures. As superficial events flood in one after another, their awareness and perspective become concentrated on them, and the “stillness needed to see the structure” is lost. What happens is that while their knowledge increases, what they see becomes short-sighted and shallow.

People with low structural resolution treat the same pattern of events as a “new incident” every time. That's why they don't learn. On the other hand, people with high structural resolution notice that the same structure from ten years ago is repeating. That's why they can read the future.

The fastest way to increase the resolution of a structure is to peel back three layers of “why.”

The habit of descending through hierarchy: phenomenon → structure → meta-structure

The shortest route to strengthening structural vision is to ask "why is it like that?" not just once, but at least three times. The "why" of a phenomenon reveals its structure. The "why" of a structure reveals its meta-structure. When you train yourself to go down through these three layers, the same information suddenly begins to stand out as something completely different.

As long as you only deal with observable phenomena, you will quickly hit a resolution ceiling. Only when you delve deeper behind the phenomena, to the point before concepts and words are born, can you truly grasp “essence.”

Intelligence isn't about speed of processing. It's largely about which level you're observing.

Beyond delving into specifics, it's about enhancing the precision of your own frame of reference as a broad structure. I want you to truly feel the importance of improving your structural vision. You should be able to understand that knowing your city after gazing at a world map and understanding its vastness provides a completely different perspective.
