The Dangerous Blind Spot of "Shed Your Ego"
Thoughts can become a weapon if used incorrectly.
Anyone who has even touched upon spirituality or Eastern philosophy has likely heard it at least once.
Let go of your ego. Become selfless. Transcend your ego.
It's like they're saying my very existence is in the way. But, wait a minute.
Is it really that bad to have self-esteem?
Are one's desires, fears, and sense of comparison a "sin" that should be overcome?
Looking back at history, the concept of "Muga" (selflessness) was utilized as "Messhi Hokō" (dedication of oneself to public duty) in Japan during wartime. Suppressing the individual and offering one's life for the collective was considered a virtue. The consequences of this are self-evident and need no elaboration here.
Therefore, the idea of "losing oneself" is extremely dangerous if misused.
Despite this, "Let go of your ego" is constantly repeated as a slogan in the modern spiritual and self-help world. However, how many people can clearly articulate what lies beyond shedding the ego?
Define the three concepts accurately.
Self, True Self, No-Self – Not Opposition, but a Map of Evolution
The self is an illusion of "me as an individual" composed of thoughts, memories, roles, and emotions. It is something that changes, something conditioned. It is a collection of labels like "I am XX."
The true self is the "core of existence itself" that lies within. It is unchanging, eternal, pure consciousness. It is beyond even the words "I am," simply existing there.
Ego death does not mean "I disappear." It is the transparency of the structures that defined me. It is a state where the boundaries between self and other become blurred, the sense of time thins, and everything is felt as "being."
These three are not opposed to each other, but rather are part of a single evolutionary process.
The self is not "eliminated" but "seen through."
Polishing, not destruction—towards a light-transmitting structure
Instead of denying the ego, assume there is a process by which the ego "transcends" toward the true self.
It is not destruction, but polishing. The ego does not weaken, but becomes a structure that allows light to pass through.
It's like polishing glass. The glass itself doesn't disappear. It's just that by removing the smudges, you can see through to the other side.
When the ego becomes transparent, the light of the true self beyond it shines through unimpeded. This is the essence of someone who changes the atmosphere around them just by being present. Someone who calms your mind simply by speaking. Someone who changes the trajectory of your life just by meeting them.
Instead of "to lose," use "to see through."
I want you to see for yourself what lies beyond.
It's not "lose yourself."
Look through myself and see what's beyond it.
I want you to see for yourself what's there.
