What is playfulness? It is not about messing around, but the power to "shift the established."

Release Date: September 18, 2026 Updated: September 21, 2026
What is playfulness? It is not about messing around, but the power to "shift the established."

Don't be fooled by the idea that playfulness equals messing around

First and foremost, playfulness is not just about messing around and being lazy.

So what is the difference between things that are fun and things that are not? Without looking at that, saying "let's play more" won't change a thing.

── The moment the purpose is decided, the fun disappears.

The goal is fixed in advance. The means to get there are brought in from the outside. At times like this, people don't find it interesting. Because what they are doing becomes mere "busywork."

The same structure applies when ingenuity at the beginning backfires. The goal remains unchanged, and only the means are swapped out. That is nothing more than spinning in circles inside pre-determined boundaries.

Interest does not lie within the fixed and predetermined. It is born from a slight deviation from the established norm.

It's not that changing your environment will change you.

When wanting to change, people first try to change their environment. They change their location. They change the people they associate with. They change their systems.

However, if we operate under the same premises, we'll end up right back where we started. Even though we changed our environment, before we know it, we're having the exact same conversation again.

Humans are influenced by their environment while simultaneously influencing it. Therefore, the order is reversed. When you yourself shift, the environment you experience begins to change as a result.

── People are confined within their own culture.

As more eccentric people accumulate, society will naturally change as those effects are integrated over time.

However, everyone has their own culture. People gather only with those who share the same values and live within that narrow sphere. The room to accept different values is much smaller than we think.

That is precisely why, before trying to change the outside, you have to make a shift within yourself. Only from there can you step outside the domain.

"Normal" is a source of conflict.

Think back to an elementary school classroom. There is a slightly unusual child. They don't fit in with the others. They are seen as "outcasts" or "a bit weird." From there, bullying happens.

Adults are the same. When they try to say something, when they try to move, they think about "normal" first. They think about the "correct answer." They fit themselves into an averaged-out environment.

The mechanism of flicking away things that are out of alignment forms a continuous line from the classroom to society, and even to conflicts between nations. That is precisely why an increase in people capable of causing such shifts will change the very nature of conflict. Playfulness is not something that ends as mere personal amusement.

── To shift it, you need a foundation

The easy mistake to make here is mistakenly believing that shifting means "anything goes."

The ability to think, the ability to learn, the resolution with which one views things—only when these fundamental axes are in place can one see where to shift things to make them interesting. Confirming what was previously unseen and turning it into something visible. Within that back-and-forth lies the point of divergence.

Without the basics, you cannot even deviate; you are simply out of touch. Playfulness only works on top of a solid foundation.

Playfulness is the power to shift fixed things just a little. It is the power to shift oneself rather than the environment, and to cast questions outward toward the outside of the "ordinary" upon the foundation.

That is precisely why the question we should be asking is not, "How can we make this more interesting?" but rather, "What am I currently assuming is the correct answer?" Realizing that is the first step to getting your sense of playfulness moving.
