Beyond "Entering the Zone" – From Catcher to Medium – When the Subject Disappears, It Aligns with the Flow of the World
「Enter the zoneThe word " " is frequently used in the context of sports and business.
According to Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's flow theory, when a person enters "the zone," their sense of time disappears, self-consciousness fades, and action and awareness become one. It is a state of high concentration that is triggered when the balance between skills and challenges is just right.
This much is well-known.
However, in the zone There is more beyond that。
- Report Beyond Flow Theory
- The disappearance of the agent structure
- Pure Experience and Synchronization with the World
- Zone hierarchy
- The realm beyond vocabulary
- What creates people is the illusion of a "past"—as long as we protect it, the next one won't come.
- Nothing is greater than your own capacity—no one, no information, no money, everything is determined by the limits of your tolerance.
- What is playfulness? It is not about messing around, but the power to "shift the established."
Report Beyond Flow Theory
Flow theory describes the zone as "a state of concentration that maximizes individual performance."
This is correct. However, some zone experiencers have reported phenomena that clearly go beyond the framework of flow theory.
I wasn't playing, the play was happening.
"I could see the outcome before the other person even made a move."
I was a medium, and something was moving through me.
These cannot be explained by mere "depth of focus."
Csikszentmihalyi himself, in the deepest layers of the zone, "Dissolution of the self"There is a phenomenon that goes beyond the framework of flow theory."
The disappearance of the agent structure
In a normal state of consciousness, the "self that acts" and the "object that is acted upon" are separate.
Myself hitting the ball, and the ball being hit. Myself speaking, and the person being spoken to.
In the deep layers of the zone, this separation disappear。
The distinction between actor and object of action disappears, leaving only the action.
The philosopher Kitaro Nishida referred to this as "Pure experiencecalled it. The state of direct experience before the subject and object were separated.
What is happening in the depths of the zone is close to the structure of this pure experience. The self as a subject fades, and consciousness synchronizes with the flow of the world.。
Pure Experience and Synchronization with the World
There's an important distinction here.
The zone, as dealt with by flow theory, is positioned as a "tool to enhance one's performance."
However, the realm beyond that,Not an accessory。
There is no "self that enhances its own performance" itself. There is only consciousness as a medium, synchronized with the flow of the world.
When an athlete says, "I don't remember that game well," it's not a problem with
The "self" that I was supposed to remember was gone at that time. This is testimony to that structural fact.
Zone hierarchy
Zones have a hierarchy. The zone addressed by flow theory is the shallowest zone. It is a state of high concentration and improved performance.
Beyond that lies a layer where the ego recedes and the separation between subject and object dissolves.
Beyond that, there is a layer where your own existence functions as a sort of conduit.
At the deepest level, no longer "in the zone," but "Where the zone is happeningAs that, that person exists.
The realm beyond vocabulary
Beyond this point, it's an area that cannot be handled with psychological vocabulary.
Skills, concentration, flow, performance—these words cannot describe the deepest zone. This is because, in the deepest zone, the "subject using skills" and the "subject concentrating" both disappear. Different vocabulary is needed to describe it.
The purity of self, the inversion of subject, and consciousness as a medium—frameworks that deal with structures other than flow theory. Entering the zone is merely the gateway.
