Why is your heart always wavering?
Try to imagine the world of the mind as the sea.
On the sea's surface, waves are always present. Wind blows, ships pass, birds fly, and rain falls. The sea's surface directly reflects the influences from the outside world.
This sea surface is your everyday consciousness.
Thoughts, emotions, stimuli from society. Someone is angry on social media. My boss isn't replying. The train is delayed. Each of these ripples constantly agitates the surface of the sea.
As long as you're on the sea's surface, you're always bobbing.
The real you, named the deep sea
Meditation is a journey of descending through layers.
So, what about the deep sea?
In the deep parts of the ocean, there are no waves. Light does not reach there either. Sounds are distant. There is only a quiet water pressure. No matter how stormy the weather is outside, the deep sea water remains quiet forever.
This deep sea is your true self.
Meditation is akin to diving from the sea's surface to the deep ocean. There's no need to rush. You simply sink slowly. There are many layers along the way: layers of thought, layers of emotion, layers of memory. Passing through each, you go deeper.
Turning back is not failure.
As you get used to the water pressure, your mind also gets used to the depth.
At first, you often turn back at intermediate layers.
I return, suffocating in the layer of thought. I return, touching pain in the layer of emotion and fleeing. Events from the past surface in the layer of memory, causing me to hastily ascend. This is not a failure, but rather a normal process. Because I've over-constructed myself to interact with the outside world, I'm afraid to confront my true self. Some people flee as a conditioned reflex.
Just by continuing it, your consciousness will gradually get used to the depth without you realizing it, just as your body gradually gets used to water pressure. Through daily meditation, the depth you can dive into will gradually expand. If you try to dive deep all at once in a hurry, your ears will only hurt. Don't rush. This is more important than easy techniques.
The strength of a person who knows where to return
Those who have descended to the deep sea once no longer fear tremors.
Fascinated by events on the ocean's surface, they don't even realize they have a deep sea within themselves. Many may never have dived that deep.
Meditation teaches you only one thing.
The deep sea has always been there. You just didn't notice it.
And one more important thing.
Even those who have descended to the deep sea once never lose the feeling that they have a place to return to, no matter how much they are tossed by the waves at the surface afterward.
