What to eat today? Continue this job? Go out with that person? Invest in this? Every day, people make countless decisions, both consciously and unconsciously. And they believe they make most of them "on their own." But is that really true?
The illusion of "deciding for myself"
UnconsciousizationRethinking the "quality" of decision-making
Are you choosing it just because everyone else is?
Are you avoiding it just because you have a vague sense of unease?
"When you think about it logically," is there really your own intention behind those words?
To reduce the cognitive cost of decision-making, people unconsciously rely on their intuition, stopping their thought process and repeating decisions.
And the "layers" of that decision-making are actually different.
Even with the same decision to "quit," deciding to quit "because I'm scared" and deciding to quit "because it intuitively feels wrong" originate from entirely different levels. Even if the outcome is the same, the quality is different. And in the long run, that difference in quality will decisively determine the direction of one's life.
Decision-making has a clear hierarchy.
From shallow to deep layersUnconscious? Consciousness? Subconscious?
The shallowest layer is an emotional reaction. I stop because I'm annoyed. I don't do it because I'm scared. I do it on a whim. There's no reproducibility or consistency.
One level up from that is responsiveness to the environment. Reading the room. Following common sense. Conforming to one's surroundings. Lacking autonomy, with responsibility lying externally.
Above that, there is logical thinking. It analyzes structure, considers causality, and judges rationally. It can explain, but there is no "emergence." It's correct, but not new.
Intuition is separate from emotion.
Sometimes accuracy goes beyond logic in ways that cannot be put into words.
And on top of that, there is "intuition."
I get it. I understand it in my body. I can't explain why, but I'm sure of it.
This is completely different from an emotional response. It's a non-linear judgment that transcends logic, arising unconsciously from a pure resonance with the self.
Intuition is different from "just a hunch." A hunch is ambiguity due to a lack of information, while intuition is compression due to an over-processing of information. It's just that language can't keep up with the result of processing too much information simultaneously, but its accuracy can sometimes be higher than logic.
A deeper layer—decisions that "come down"
Resonance with the future, beyond effort and analysis
On top of that—there's another layer.
"Coming down," "will arising." Signals from something greater than oneself. Conviction beyond effort or analysis. Decisions through unconscious resonance with the future.
Where do your daily decisions come from?
By recognizing that, the quality of life might fundamentally change.
